Not Always Rainbows & Butterflies

Writer: Alex CoyneAlex Coyne

REAL POST: It’s not always rainbows & butterflies. It’s not always waking up at 4:15 am with no snooze. Motivated to crush the day. Not everyday is a great workout before 5:00 am hits. It’s not always the most positive outlook and crusher mentality. Some days, some weeks, and some seasons are exhaustion, fatigue, and frustration. It’s waking up 1.5 hours past my original alarm. People always ask me “how are you so motivated all the time?” I am humbled, but always giggle inside because I immediately think to myself “my goodness, if you were inside my head, you would NOT ask me that!!” Truth is, I’m not. The ugly truth about me: if I don’t consciously work on it, my innate thoughts are more negative than they are positive. My natural tendency is to wake up tired and frustrated, being ultra hard on myself for what I HAVENT gotten to, rather than being proud of how far I’ve come. ————————— But, that’s not how I want to live my life. Some days are easier to win the mental battle than others. Right now, it feels hard. But today, frustrated that I slept in far past my alarm and having to choose between a workout and just skipping it to get to work, I chose workout. I chose to put one mark on the “win” column for today, after 3 or 4 marks in the “lose” column before 6:00 am hit. And boy, was I glad I did that. Working out, for me, has always been more about my mental well-being than my physical well-being (although, I do also enjoy the physical rewards of working out) ————————— My thoughts: -it’s never too late in the day to fight to get a mark in the “win” column. -life is about momentum. Multiple “losses” in a row will likely lead to more losses. Multiple “wins” in a row will also lead to more wins. You have the power to choose which column to gain momentum in. -figure out what your individual “wins” and “losses” are. For me, my wins: working out! worship. reading. personal development. cleaning. And of course, as you know, writing Also know what starts momentum in your loss column. For me, scrolling on social media, skipping workouts, messy environment. sleeping in, etc. Try to choose a win over a loss every time! -G-R-A-C-E: I don’t love the word “impossible” but it is very difficult to have a day where you are 100% win, no losses. have grace when you tack a loss on, and have intention to try to tack on wins. -It has been a LONG road working on my mental game. Choosing to immediately kill the negativity in the morning a choose positivity. Choosing to do the RIGHT thing over the easy thing. Choosing OWNERSHIP over victim. Choosing CONFIDENCE over imposter syndrome. Truthfully, I’m not all the way there, it’ll always be a war I’m working on winning. But I’ve come a long way from where I used to be. -In the famous words of James Clear in Atomic Habits (paraphrased): it’s not all or nothing. Winning the day isn’t 100% wins, 0 losses. Winning the day is like winning the election, all you need is the MAJORITY. if you tack ONE more win over all than you did losses (51/49) than you’ve won the day!!! —————- Here’s to trying to win more battles than we lose. Here’s to intentional thinking and decision making. And most importantly, here’s to having grace when it doesn’t always go the way we wanted it to.

Lastly, here’s to the REAL side of people, not just what you see on social media.
